ROBERT ENKE - RIP "FOOTBALL BROTHER"

Win Number 57

The Lakers won their 4th in a row yesterday and raised their record to 57-14 with a 92-77 win over the Detroit Pistons. The Pistons are a shell of what they used to be in the early 2000's. These Pistons are struggling to even make the playoffs and will likely be eliminated in the first round of the playoffs if they get in. They played without Rasheed Wallace, Rip Hamilton and Allen Iverson. Kobe went for 30 points, 8 rebounds and 7 assists. Derek Fisher added 15, Lamar Odom and Pau Gasol scored 12 apiece. Detroit was led by reserve point guard Will Bynum who had 25 points and 11 assists. The Lakers have now won 8 out of 10 and continue to look like the best team in the NBA. One more win and the Lakers will clinch home court advantage throughout the Western Conference playoffs.

Neid critical of Ryan tactics

Germany coach Silvia Neid was more disappointed in the U.S. than impressed by Brazil, saying her team would not give the flamboyant South Americans the space afforded by the below-par Americans.
"I was surprised by the United States," Neid said. "I have never seen them play like that before. They were never in the game, and when they went behind they just couldn't pick themselves up."
"If you try to cover Marta with player-to-player marking, it just won't work. You saw what happened to the Americans when they tried that."

USA 2, China 0

The U.S. soccer team couldn't find a way to score against China — until Abby Wambach leaped into action. Wambach scored twice on headers in the second half to give the Americans, ranked No. 1 in the world, a 2-0 win Saturday night.

USA 3, Mexico 1

The U.S. Women's National Team defeated Mexico, 3-1, as Abby Wambach scored twice and Lindsay Tarpley added a goal.

The USA returns to the field on Oct. 1 against Chinese Taipei at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif. That match kicks off at 1 p.m. PT live on ESPN2.
The US will finish its 2006 schedule of domestic friendly matches on Oct. 8 at the University of Richmond against Iceland. That game kicks off at 2 p.m. ET live on ESPN2.

Montezemolo: Massa not under pressure

01 April 2008---

Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo says Brazilian driver Felipe Massa in not under pressure despite his poor start to the 2008 season.

Massa has retired from both the Australian and Malaysian Grands Prix - from second in the second race - and speculation has already suggested the Brazilian's seat could be in danger despite having two years of his contract left.

But di Montezemolo has moved to quash all rumours, saying Ferrari have the best driver line-up in the world.

"Felipe Massa is absolutely not under any scrutiny," di M! ontezemolo told Gazzetta dello Sport. "In fact, we at Ferrari have the best driver pairing in the world.

"I expect a great race from Felipe in Bahrain, after his wonderful qualifying session in Malaysia."

Di Montezemolo said he expected Ferrari to bounce back in Malaysia following their dismal weekend in Australia, where both cars retired.

"I expected that, and I'm convinced we have an exceptional team and a competitive car," he added. "This is not a competition between singles and married people: it will be a big challenge because the greatest car manufacturers in the world are in it.

"I'm very confident, also because I know there is a nice development program for the car."

Highlanders vs Lions

This is a tough one to call. Both teams are shaping up to be contenders for the wooden spoon of the Super 14 but at the same time, they're so evenly matched that it's actually a clash to look forward to. The Highlanders are stone last at the moment with only five bonus points to show after their first seven matches. They're still a young team with no real stars so we're not expecting too many waves from them this season.

The Lions on the other hand have put in a string of good performances this season so far but just havn't been able to make the last pass stick. But with stars like Earl Rose, Cobus Grobbelaar and Joe van Niekerk the Lions can finally realise their potential.

Prediction: Lions by 5.

Chelsea keep title hopes alive

The English Premier League title will be decided on the final day of the season after Chelsea beat Newcastle 2-0. The Blues are level with Manchester United at the top of the table, but United have a much better goal difference.

Chelsea manager Avram Grant believes whatever happens Chelsea can be proud of what they've achieved, while Skipper John Terry hopes United will stumble in their last match against Wigan.

Black Caps robbed of a shot at victory

New Zealand cricketers have the right to feel disappointed after the second one day match against England was controversially called off due to persistent rain. The Black Caps were 127 for 2 after the 19th over when the umpires called off the game. They were chasing a revised target of 134 in 20 overs, which meant they needed just 7 runs in the last over to win the match and level the series. Besides the rain, the match was also affected by a half an hour delay between innings.

New Zealand skipper Daniel Vettori said: "We were in a situation where we would've won the game and to be told you have to leave the field, with so many delays going on, instead of just bowling the over, obviously it doesn't lighten anyone's mood."

England captain Paul Collingwood said: "Both teams were in with a shout there. One wicket and we were ahead in the Duckworth-Lewis. It really came down to a fine line there, but I think the umpires made the right decision in the end."

SAA Club Championships begin

The Club Championship kicks of this weekend at the Danie Craven Stadium in Stellenbosch on Sunday.

Maties are looking to get their hands on a thirteenth Championship trophy. The Varsity team have been doing very well in the Super League, they top the log and have only lost one game. Coach Chean Roux say this tournmaent will be a learning curve as many of his players are in experienced and playing in their first Championship.

The other Cape Town team involved in the tournament is SK Walmers who are currently second in the league. SK face Tukkies in their first game. The Pretoria side are one of the favourites in the competition. However Roux says with the way SK have been performing it will not be a surprise if they beat Tukkies.

Rain and cold test Berg paddlers

Graeme Solomon (Peninsula Canoe Club) and Hank McGregor (Stella CC, KZN) wrapped up the first stage of the Isuzu Berg River Canoe Marathon together after the 62km paddle from Paarl to Zonquasdrift raced on a fast flowing, and rising Berg river that saw the stage record shattered. With the torrential rains that have hammered the Cape Peninsula battering the paddlers all day, the pair covered the distance in a record breaking time of 3 hours and 45 minutes, after having shaken off Lance King (Milnerton CC) and Heinrich Schloms (Stellenbosch CC) earlier in the morning.

An eleventh hour rule change that pre! vented the elite women from riding the slip waves of any male paddlers didnt concern Abbey Miedema, pictured above, who raced brilliantly as always to set up a four minute lead over seventeen year old Epworth schoolgirl from KZN, Abie Adie. Young paddlers are threatning to challenge Hank McGregor's supremacy, but one wonders how much Abbey has in reserve, she just needs a challenge from somewhere!

Valencia Circuit: The Suzuka of the Streets

The Suzuka International Circuit was the first international speedway in Japan and has been widely heralded since it was completed in 1962 and served as a test track for Honda Motor Company. Suzuka still evokes many dramatic images from the past. One can look back to the legendary clashes of bitter rivals Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost in 1989 and 1990; the title clinching performances of Damon Hill in 1996 and Mika Hakkinen in 1998 and 1999; and mostly recently Michael Schumacher's improbable engine failure that all but gift-wrapped the 2006 Driver's Championship to Fernando Alonso. If you played the Pole Position series of games back in the day, you surely have driven this amazing track with great corners such as 130R and 'S'! curve.

Suzuka is a true driver's circuit that is universally loved. In the words of Fernando Alonso, "it's a very trying track for drivers and very technical: you have to have a car that is stable in the front for the changes of direction, and a stable rear so you can have the confidence to attack the high speed corners. The other thing about Suzuka though, is that you have to take risks in the corners — and all drivers like that." It was a true shame to see this circuit axed from the Formula One schedule.

However, having looked at a collection of photos, simulations and now some actually video of the new Valencia Street Circuit in Spain, it appears that we may have a true gem in our hands. The Valencia Street Circuit, new for the 2008 F1 season, is the host for this year's F1 European Grand Prix. Although already celebrated for the great urban scenery the circuit itself appears to be quite the eye catcher and a technical challenge to drive. First, it! is a street circuit. This in and of itself presents a real te! st of co urage with concrete barriers lining the track and projected speeds of about 200 mph. Second, the number of corners will keep the drivers attention and will present a physical challenge. Moreover, there are a number of these corners that appear to be very quick and have a good sequence and flow to them that should be a real joy to watch in a Formula One car. In other sections, a driver's right foot will be tested by the slow corners as there is no traction control; a driver will have to have good rhythm to maximize the lap time. It is this mix of high speeds, technical corners, sweeps and physical demand which makes it similar to Suzuka.

In the words of Panasonic Toyota driver Jarno Trulli, "the track looks amazing. I have seen the lay-out and the location but the best way to prepare for racing on a new track is to get there as soon as possible to spot the small details on the track. The best way to understand a circuit is to drive it and I can not wait!" According to McLaren Mercedes driver, Lewis Hamilton, "it looks like an amazing track".

Still, a driver needs a team of engineers that also understand the challenge. Honda F1 Team Principal, Ross Brawn says, "it is going to be a medium to low downforce track with a couple of quick corners which will present a very challenging circuit in an exciting environment. The Valencia weekend is going to be a fascinating engineering challenge for the team and we are all looking forward to it." If there ever was a street circuit that would be a real driver's circuit my initial impression! s would be that this is the one. Again, this track is going to! be a bl ast to watch a Formula One race on. However, the proof is going to be when 1st Friday practice begins. For some comparsion, check out the onboard laps of each circuit. However, the onboard lap of Valencia is that of a lower formula race. Now imagine the speed generated that will be generated by an F1 car.

Raikkonen finally admits the obvious

It appears that Ferrari driver Kimi Raikkonen finally admitted to what seemed very obvious to anyone that watched the 2008 F1 season....he simply was not interested.

Reported on F1 Technical, Raikkonen declared to Finnish TV channel 'MTV3'; "When there are no opportunities to overtake or to improve your position it is definitely not very interesting. But that is the way it is. When you know you're fighting for just P3 you simply don't always have the same speed for the whole race as you would normally have."

This coming from a man that was sitting in a car that won the Constructor's title in 2008! I wonder how much of his "lack of interest" was due to the emergence of Felipe Massa who is clearly the strongest teammate Raikkonen has ever had.

It is worthwhile to revisit a Raikkonen post at the beginning of October:

Juventus Keep Tabs On Liverpool Midfielder Javier Mascherano

Juventus are about to rekindle their interest in Liverpool's Javier Mascherano for next summer's transfer window.

According to Il Corriere Dello Sport, the Bianconeri are drawing up early plans for the winter, but the idea is likely to materialise later on next year.

The report suggests Mascherano had considered leaving the Reds during the summer for Spanish giants Barcelona, but the move never took off the ground. Voices claim the Argentine is unsettled at Anfield, and the club could consider a major offer should it arrive.

The Old Lady are said to be keen, but signing him will not be cheap. Liverpool would not accept anything less than €25million for t! heir man and having already shelled out a considerable fee for Felipe Melo in the summer, they may be reluctant to add yet more expensive muscle to the midfield.

Juve have not confirmed the report

Rafael Benitez Offers His Support For Demoted Official Mike Jones Over Beach Ball Goal

Rafael Benítez, the Liverpool manager, has again passed up the opportunity to criticise Mike Jones, the referee who failed to rule out Sunderland's winning goal against the Merseyside club on Saturday. Darren Bent's shot found the net via a deflection off a beach ball that had been thrown onto the pitch.

Jones was yesterday demoted from Barclays Premier League duties for the forthcoming weekend after his failure to implement the Fifa law which stipulates that games should be stopped in the event of any outside interference. The official will take charge of the Coca-Cola Championship fixture at London Road between Peterborough United and Scunthorpe United.

Jones has been heavily criticised by Graham Poll, Dermot Gallagher and Jeff Winter, his former colleagues, but Benítez, although still surprised at the error, has taken a different tack, choosing to offer the referee his support. The Spaniard also! ruled out any possibility of Liverpool asking for the match to be replayed.

"The situation is that we cannot change this," Benítez said. "I think that the rule is very clear. Everybody knows and all the experts agree that the goal had to be disallowed but we cannot do anything now so we have to move forward.

"I don't know if he didn't know about the rule, maybe he couldn't see. Anyway I think that it is better to move on. I think the referees and Keith Hackett [the general manager of the Professional Game Match Officials Ltd] know that a mistake has been made, but I do not want to criticise. He is a young referee and there are not too many referees around the world, so if you have someone who has a passion and wants to be a good referee, then the best thing to do is to just move on.

"I said after the game that we did not play well because I did not want to use the incident as an excuse. It was an important situation because, with the proble! ms that we had, to start the game by going a goal behind was n! ot the b est situation for us.

"But still it is something that you have to forget and to think only about what you can influence now, like this Champions League game [against Lyons at Anfield this evening]. A lot of people are saying that the game should be replayed but we will not be asking for this."

Rafael Benitez: Alberto Aquilani Closing In On Liverpool Start

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez has hinted that Italian midfielder Alberto Aquilani will be ready for a first team start within the next couple of weeks.

The 25-year-old was signed by the Reds during the summer for around £17 million from Roma although an ankle injury has kept him sidelined for the first couple of months of the season.

Aquilani did, however, make his first team bow in the League Cup last week, coming on as a late substitute in the 2-1 defeat to Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium although a virus will keep the Italian international out of contention for this afternoon's encounter with Fulham.

Despite his latest injury setback, Benitez has s! uggested that the playmaking midfielder will be ready to start within the next two weeks which would see him line-up in the crucial game against Manchester City at Anfield next month.

"He [Aquilani] wants to play," the Reds boss told a group of assembled radio journalists, as quoted by the club's official website.

"We were talking about his match fitness and he was pushing us saying he wants to play.

"He has a really good mentality and he wants to impress. We have to decide and be careful with him. If he is okay then maybe in one or two weeks he can start."

Pirelli pumps up Canadian participation

By John Hopkins

TORONTO, ON -- Pirelli will make a major increase in its participation in Canadian road racing this season as part of an expanded contingency program across North America.

The company will be involved in nine provincial series, as opposed to just two in 2004, and continue its involvement with the Parts Canada Superbike Championship, according to a press release from Pirelli Racing issued today.

Pirelli's total road racing contingency postings in North America will exceed $2.5 million (U.S.), an increase of almost $300,000 from 2004, the release said. This is the second year Pirelli has posted over $2.3 million (U.S.) in road racing contingency.

Pirelli will pay finishes as deep as 10th place, depending on race organization and class, and it has lifted the restriction that limited contingency payments to a racer's best four finishes over the course of a race weekend.
All details of the program are available by going to the "Pirelli Racing Contingency" link on the company's U.S. website, www.us.pirellimoto.com, or by contacting its Canadian race vendor, Orion Motorsports at 416-414-9911.

Bengals Day One

Wow! You have to feel happy about the first day. I feel like the Bengals got a lot of value in their positions. Andre Smith was ranked as the #1 player on most boards right after the college football season...you know the football field, where they actually play football. He had some immature moments off the field, no doubt. He doesn't look great with his shirt off, but like Dave Lapham said, have you seen Willie Anderson with his shirt off? Just watch the tape and you'll see how he dominates the competition. I think he was a great choice.

The second choice may be even more exciting. The Bengals got a real AFC North type of football player. Rey Maualuga was projected to go #12 by The Sporting News. We got him at 38. He is intense! He puts fear into the offense. He flies all over the field and hits hard. He is that vocal, nasty, intense linebacker that the successful AFC North teams have always had. I was hoping for a center in the 2nd round before the d! ay started, but if Maualuga is sitting there you have to take him. Plus, communication is key for linebackers and he has already built that with Keith Rivers, they played for 2 years together at USC. Loved that pick!

Tomorrow I am hoping for a center. Wood, Unger and Mack are already gone. I think Antoine Caldwell will probably be there, the center from Alabama. I still think the Bengals will be looking for a RB in this draft as well. If thats the case, it could be Big Ten Player of the Year, Shonn Greene out of Iowa. Mel Kiper has 4 tight ends in his list of top available players, the Bengals could be interested in a TE as well.

All in all I am pretty excited about the first day. We always question one or both picks in the 1st and 2nd rounds. I don't feel that uneasiness this time. >

Ouch! Peter King on the Bengals of Old

In this weeks Monday Morning Quarterback, Peter King discussed Dick LeBeau and how he should be in the Hall of Fame. He also takes a big shot at the Bengals...

"LeBeau did not succeed as a head coach, going 12-36 in three seasons with the Bengals when he finally got his chance to run a team. But I can tell, having been around that team a lot over the years, that Vince Lombardi could have coached them with Bill Walsh his offensive coordinator and Bill Belichick on the defensive side, and it'd still have been a disaster."

Gooo Raiders

Hilarious... how would you like to be the media giving players an interview with this guy in the background.

Don't Ignore Round 2

For most people the 2nd round of the NBA draft is as useful as a bottle openers when you've got twist offs. In fact the popular belief is that after the lottery, there are not any game changers left. Either you pick high or make a trade to help your team on draft night. Well evidence proves otherwise. Teams that can draft well at the end of the 1st round and in the 2nd, set themselves up for success. Look at the Celtics, (I know everyone outside of New England is sick of it) they were able to pick well late in the draft to help their team. Leon Powe and Glen Davis were both 2nd rounders, as was one of the key pieces in the Kevin Garnett trade, Ryan Gomes. If you can find late gems in the draft, you give your team an ! enormous advantage.

Every year there are lottery busts. These are the picks that set your franchise back, and often cripple your fan base. Dating back to the past 10 drafts, here are just some of the Top 10 picks that did not pan out: Michael Olowokandi, Raef LaFrentz, Robert Traylor, Jonathan Bender, Darius Miles, Marcus Fizer, DeMarr Johnson, Chris Mihm, Kwame Brown, Eddie Griffin, Rodney White, Nikoloz Tskitishvili, Dajuan Wagner, Darko, Mike Sweetney, Rafael Araujo, Marvin Williams (ahead of Chris Paul and D. Williams), Adam Morrison, and Patrick O'Bryant. It's too early to criticize last year's picks. But looking at those names its obvious there are no sure things in the NBA Draft. Along with lottery failures, teams can totally redeem themselves in the 2nd round. Contracts aren't guaranteed, so why not take a shot.

Here's some players who slipped through the 1st round in the past 10 drafts, and make up my list of 2nd round steals.

1998Rashad Lewis
Rafer Alston
Cuttino Mobley
199 9
Gordon Giricek
Manu Ginobili

2000
Eddie House
Michael Redd

2001

Mehmet Okur
Earl Watson
Bobby Simmons

2002
Carlos Boozer
Flip Murray
Matt Barnes

2003
Jason Kapono
Luke Walton
Steve Blake
Kyle Korver

2004
Andersen Varejao
Trevor Ariza

2005
Brandon Bass
CJ Miles
Ronny Turiaf
Monta Ellis
Louis Williams
Ryan Gomes
Amir Johnson

2006
Craig Smith
Boobie Gibson
Paul Millsap
Leon Powe

2007
Carl Landry
Glen Davis
Aaron Gray

How about the All- 2nd round team? You've got All-Stars and Olympians. You can play a lineup of Gilbert Arenas, Michael Redd, Manu Ginobili, Carlos Boozer, Mehmet Okur with Monta Ellis, Rashard Lewis, Jason Kapono, and Eddie House coming off the bench. Not bad for round 2 right?

Don! 't sleep on the 2nd rounders, or you'll be the team that passed up on the next Boozer, not once, but twice. This isn't the NFL Draft where you have 7 rounds to find that late steal. Only 60 players will be drafted on Thursday night, making the scouts' job even tougher.

Who could be this 2008's 2nd round sleepers? With so many Freshmen and foreign players dominating the draft its easy for guys to be picked too high, but on the flip side guys will slip past their value. I really like Kansas State's Bill Walker, but injuries are a concern. Late in the 1st, it will be hard to pass up on him, but if a team is too worried about his knees he better not go past 31. D.J. White from Indiana is another guy to watch. He's only 6'9'' but we've seen so many short young bigs have success by hustling and rebounding. He would be a great fit somewhere, and will absolutely have a better career than many of the 1st rounders. And lastly, New Mexico's J.R. Giddens, by way of Kansas is! very intriguing. Loads of talent, but it will ultimately come! down to the situation he lands in. So on draft night look for Bill Walker, D.J. White, and J.R. Giddens.

(Personally I will be rooting for Colorado's Richard Roby to be drafted, strictly because I played against him in high school. He was on the same team as the 15th pick in the 2005 draft Antoine Wright, as well as guys who went to Arizona State and Colgate. Roby is the half-brother of Kenyon Martin, and almost went pro after his sophomore season. He had a poor shooting junior year and had to return as a senior. He put up big numbers all four years in the Big 12, but now will have to sweat it out to see if he gets picked.)

As for guaranteed 1st round guys, I obviously like Derrick Rose and Michael Beasley like everyone else. I'm very high on O.J. Mayo, can play both guard spots and will have a solid NBA career. Eric Gordon could be a great scorer, and Brandon Rush will be a valuable piece on a championship team some day.

KG Likely Out for Playoffs

3 Words: Kobe-LeBron-Finals.

With the news this morning that Kevin Garnett is likely out for the playoffs with his bum knee, leads to the following thoughts...
But I still believe the C's can beat the Bulls and get past the Magic. I'm not sold on this Orlando team. It's going to be tough, but Boston still has Pierce, Ray, and Rondo. I don't know. Stay tuned.

The End of Jermain Taylor's Career?

Jermain Taylor is 28-4, the former undisputed middleweight champion and undoubtedly one of the top super middleweight fighters in the world. But we may have seen the end of his impressive, albeit short fighting career last night in Berlin. Fighting Arthur Abraham in the 1st round of the Super Six Super Middleweight Tournament - a terrific idea, by the way - the man known as "Bad Intentions" took a knockout blow that delivered bad intentions for the 3rd time in the last two years.

The first loss of his career came at the hands of Kelly Pavlik, a war that ended when a flurry in the corner put Taylor down and out in the 7th round to earn the win for Pavlik. After falling short in a competitive decision loss to Pavlik months later, Taylor moved up to 168, successfully defeating former super middleweight champion Jeff Lacy. The win earned him a match with undefeated WBC champion Carl Froch. And for the second time in his career, Taylor got knocked out, this time in the! final seconds of the fight ahead on the judge's scorecards. It was bad, but not as bad as the blow delivered by Abraham last night, Taylor's first fight since the Froch debacle. Check it out below...

My question is what the hell was the referee looking at? It's obvious once he goes down that Taylor is out cold. Yet the referee looks like he counts all the way to 6 or 7. In fact you can see the ringside doctor starts easing his way in as soon as Taylor went down, and he's already at Taylor by the time the ref waves it of! f. Way to have a clue, pal. But what do you think...even thoug! h it was a competitive fight and Taylor is clearly still a factor in the division, that's three bad knockouts in 2 years. Should he look to hang em up?

Malaga 0-2 Barcelona

Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Gerard Pique came off the bench to inspire Barcelona to a fifth straight Primera Division win over Malaga.

Ibrahimovic was left out of the starting line-up after picking up an ankle injury in Tuesday night's 4-1 win at Racing Santander.

But the Sweden striker has been making good progress in his recovery and was called upon after Thierry Henry was forced off through injury just short of the half-hour mark.

And Ibrahimovic was on the sc! oresheet 10 minutes later to bag his fifth goal in as many league games since joining from Inter Milan in the summer.

But Pique took even less time to make an impact, bagging a second for the Catalans only three minutes after replacing Dmytro Chygrynskiy just short of an hour, before Malaga had Duda sent off late on.

Those two strikes gave Barcelona a fifth win in five Primera Division matches this season, but saw the Catalans drop to second place after fierce rivals Real Madrid thrashed Tenerife 3-0 at the Santiago Bernabeu to go top of the table on goal difference.

Barca coach Pep Guardiola decided to leave Ibrahimovic on the bench and, with Bojan Krkic out injured, Henry moved into the centre of the side's three-pronged attack.

Lionel Messi began on the left as Pedro came in for a rare start on the right.

Barca had won all four of their previous league matches and came into this match on top the table.

But the first chance of the! night fell to Malaga.

Nigerian striker Victor Obinna l! atched o nto Duda's pass, but shot into the side netting from close range and the visitors survived.

Malaga began the season with an impressive 3-0 victory over Atletico Madrid at La Rosaleda, but the Andalusians have struggled since then and came into this match on the back of three straight defeats.

With Ibrahimovic out, Henry had the chance to impress.

The former Arsenal striker has not scored this season for Barca and had a seemingly golden chance to shine.

But the Frenchman was forced off though injury after 29 minutes and replaced by Ibrahimovic.

And the Swede was on the scoresheet 10 minutes later, when he latched onto Messi's through-ball and slotted home, albeit from what looked like an offside position.

Barca were stroking the ball in customary fashion, but Malaga were working hard and restricting the Catalans to very few real attempts on goal.

The second goal finally came just short of the hour mark.

Pique, who netted! against Atletico earlier this season and in the famous 6-2 victory at the Bernabeu last term, replaced Chygrynskiy and poked past Gustavo Munua to put Barca two up three minutes after stepping off the bench.

Messi missed two good chances to make it three and return the Catalans to the top of the league, but in the end Guardiola's side had to be content with a two-goal victory which preserved their 100% record after five rounds if the championship.

They also finished the game a man up after Duda was dismissed for Malaga.

Turkish Super Lig Review

Trabzonspor were held to a goalless draw by Gaziantepspor in the Turkish Super Lig.

The hosts had been hoping to break into the top three with a win, but were frustrated by a stubborn Gaziantepspor defence.

The point leaves Trabzonspor fifth in the table, six places better off than their opponents.

Primera Liga Sunday Review

It was a day of shocks as Atletico Madrid and Villarreal suffered defeats on Sunday.

Atletico Madrid's miserable season continued as they suffered a comprehensive 3-0 defeat at Osasuna to heap further pressure on coach Abel Resino.

With only six points now from seven games, Atletico - who left star striker Diego Forlan out of the squad - slipped to 15th in the table, one point clear of the relegation zone.

A brace of headers from veteran goalscorer Walter Pa! ndiani (4 and 28) rocked the capital club on their heels and Carlos Aranda added another for good measure in the 30th minute.

In another shock on Sunday, Xerez won the basement battle against Villarreal 2-1 to finally register their first victory of the season.

Last season's Segunda Division champions have looked hopelessly out of their depth in the first few weeks of the new season but this win moves them off the bottom with Villarreal replacing them at the foot.

It started well for the visiting side with Robert Pires putting them ahead in the 18th minute. Xerez hit back through Mario Bermejo just before half-time with Antonito grabbing the winner with 10 minutes to go.

Real Mallorca maintained their perfect home record in La Liga with an impressive 3-1 victory over Getafe.

The Balearic side began the weekend in sixth spot after impressive early-season form and were looking to bounce back from a 4-1 away defeat to Sporting Gijon before th! e international break.

And Julio Alvarez's first-half s! trike pl us a brace by Basque livewire Aritz Aduriz ensured a comfortable win over Getafe, who had also made a decent start to the campaign before today's limp loss. Juan Albin managed a late consolation.

Racing Santander produced a late fightback at La Romareda to come from two goals down to steal an unlikely point against Real Zaragoza.

Zaragoza looked to be cruising after they went two up in the first half through Carlos Pavon and Javier Arizmendi.

And that lead still looked in little danger with 10 minutes left on the clock.

But two goals in the space of four minutes, courtesy of Mohamed Tchite and Oscar Serrano, knocked the stuffing out of the home side and spoilt what had looked to be a routine win for the hosts.

Miguel De Las Cuevas struck twice as Sporting Gijon continued their fine early-season form with an impressive 2-1 win at Athletic Bilbao in a northern derby.

Ivan Alonso struck a brace to give Espanyol a hard-fought 2-1 victory! over Tenerife and make light of the controversial absence of star striker Raul Tamudo.

Tamudo is back from injury but was left out of the squad following an unseemly contract wrangle with the Catalan club this week.

Almeria claimed a deserved first away win of the season to build on their respectable single-goal loss at Barcelona and add to Malaga's early-season woes with a 2-1 win.

Two goals in a minute from Domingo Cismo and Fernando Soriano were ultimately enough to secure victory for the visitors, who had the opportunities to make the result much more comfortable.

Edinho's second-half strike gave the home side hope, but they failed to create a clear chance for an equaliser and were ultimately condemned to a fifth defeat in seven matches.

On Saturday, Valencia and Barcelona drew 0-0, Real Madrid beat Real Valladolid 4-2 and Deportivo La Coruna beat Sevilla 1-0.

Gloucester 6 Wasps 35

The Guinness Premiership game between Gloucester and Wasps at Kingsholm on Saturday Oct 24, 2009.

Gloucester, already reeling from a European drubbing last week when they leaked over 40 points in Biarritz, succumbed to another numbing defeat on Saturday night, this time at the hands of Wasps who dispensed a multitude of rugby lessons.

These are exceptionally worrying times for the Gloucester faithful because their side are a shambles and it was no surprise that many Shedheads were heading home before the final whistle. Unprecede! nted scenes.

There was plenty of huff and puff from Gloucester in the first half but precious little class and absolutely no confidence. Yes they are suffering pretty badly with injuries but that comes with the territory in Premiership rugby at present, Gloucester aren't alone in their suffering.

Taking first use of a blistery wind, Gloucester's much-criticised pack did secure more than its fair share of possession, albeit sometimes too slow at the ruck, but they barely came close in unpicking a very solid Wasps defensive line.

Former All Black Carlos Spencer, looking fit if a little over-muscled these days, missed an early penalty attempt but atoned soon after with a well struck effort to at least give Gloucester the encouragement of an early lead.

Wasps hit back well with an intensive burst of pressure, with the hyperactive Joe Simpson, Paul Sackey and Serge Betsen making ground before D! ominic Waldouck took it on and, noticing that he was being ! marked b y prop Greg Somerville, cut in at pace for what Gloucester coach Bryan Redpath will feel was a soft try.

David Walder, the ultra reliable back-up for the injured Danny Cipriani, added the extras and although a second Spencer effort pegged it back for a while Wasps pulled ahead as half-time approached with a brace of Walder penalties.

Operating off barely 40 per cent possession, it had been a typical smash and grab effort from Wasps with Betsen, who has been a terrific signing and is as committed physically now as he ever was in his international pomp, leading the defensive heroics.

We waited to see if Gloucester could unleash a plan B after the break. A powerhouse run fro Lesley Vainikolo, who had hardly featured in the first half, at least got the Kingsholm crowd going but Wasps reorganized quickly and Gloucester offended at the attack petered out.

Better still they went straight upfield and hooker Joe Ward, ! who buzzed around the splendid effect all night, showed good dancing feet to inject pace into an attack before good hands along the line sent Mark van Gisbergen stepping infield to score in the right hand corner. 18-6 down and Kingsholm was mute.

Their side did perk up a little and it looked like their go-to man James Simpson-Daniel was going to jink over before he was scythed down in a double tackle by Betsen and Sackey. Wasps were at their most obdurate defensively, they knew this match was there for the taking.

Even the departure of Waldouck with a suspected broken cheekbone after an accidental clash of heads with Betsen couldn't disrupt Wasps. They were on the case and after soaking up more pressure from Gloucester, Wasps went straight back upfield for Walder to kick another fine penalty. Game, set and match.

Still time however for the deserving Betsen to score under the posts after more excellent work from Simpso! n and a second try for Van Gisbergen. Outstanding from Wasp! s but Gl oucester were woeful.

Ross Fisher to play Angel Cabrera in Volvo Matchplay semi-finals

Ross Fisher is the only Englishman through to the semi-finals of the Volvo World Matchplay after the 28 year-old beat Jeev Milkha Singh in his crucial group game.

Fisher will play Masters champion Angel Cabrera and believes that a victory here will give him a chance of winning the inaugural Race to Dubai.

The leading four - Lee Westwood, Martin Kaymer, Rory McIlroy and Paul Casey - all went out in the group stages. Fisher also pointed out that Europe's captain Colin Montgomerie was here on Spain's Costa del Sol this week and a victory in the World! Matchplay would help his chances of making his Ryder Cup debut next year.

Fisher is now close to being the best player in Europe. In 2009 he has compiled the best aggregate score across all four majors. He said: "To be the best player in all four majors is a huge confidence boost. Tiger and Phil, a lot of good players have 'won' that.

To have my name among those great players means a hell of a lot." It wouldn't mean a hell of a lot to Woods unless he had actually won one of them. Golf is measured by victories and Fisher has yet to win this year. He had good chances at the US Open and the Open and he was unable to take them.

The grudge semi-final is between Anthony Kim and Robert Allenby after the Australian had called Kim the new John Daly for his late-night antics. Allenby revised his opinion on Friday and said that Kim was perhaps "the next Tiger Woods". That's quite a promotion in just three! weeks.

There was some evidence of that on Friday. Ne! eding to win the last hole of his match against Scott Strange to make it into the semi-finals, Kim ripped a three-wood from 274 yards. His ball finished five feet from the hole. Kim's caddie said: "He likes putting himself in these positions. He thrives on them." Like Woods.

It has been a tough year for Allenby, after his mother died in January. For a while he just did not feel like playing golf. Now he is playing better than ever after adopting a claw putting grip and he has brought Don, his 80-year-old father over with him this week.

Don is a Yorkshireman, but before you start rooting for Allenby Jnr, consider this. The 38-year-old Australian said: "My dad was born in Leeds but he barracks now for Australia in cricket. I converted him." Can someone pass Geoffrey Boycott a stiff tonic.

Bufera Salernitana, via il ds Acri

Ore frenetiche in casa Salernitana.

Allenamento pomeridiano a porte chiuse

Fonte: unionesarda.it 20/10/09

FANTANEWS: DAVIDE BATTE GOLIA

---------------------- DAVIDE BATTE GOLIA ------------------------

Grandissimo Celestino! Direi statisticamente impossibile.

Armata 39
Blucrociata Mattia 38
Dinamo Tofa 36
Real Marcina 34
I Love Giorgia 33
Mani Pulite 32

Risultati di domenica:
CELE-PIERO=2-2, GIO-TOMMY=1-3, PAOLO-FELIX=2-5, RAF-CAMPOS=1-0

Trapattoni secures new Republic of Ireland deal

Giovanni Trapattoni has signed an extension to his contract as Republic of Ireland coach. He also announced the provisional squad for the remaining Group 8 World Cup qualifiers.

Beyond 2010 for Trap

The new deal will see 70-year-old go on past the current 2010 World Cup campaign and onto the Euro 2012 campaign.

"I am delighted to continue my job with the FAI," Trapattoni told the Football Association of Ireland website.

"This squad has huge potential. Our results demonstrate what self belief and structure can achieve and I am really looking forward to continuing the work we have begun."

Remaining World Cup qualifiers

The Republic can still grab an automatic World Cup spot if they beat Italy on October 10th and Montenegro four days later, but only as long as the Italians also slip up in their final game against Cyprus.

While a play-off place seems more likely, Trapat! toni is still looking for a final push from his squad.

"The final two qualifying matches against Italy and Montenegro in Croke Park next month will be pivotal in our efforts to qualify for South Africa. Having performed well against both Italy and Montenegro away from home, we hope that playing in front of a home crowd against these teams will give us an extra advantage. Everything is still to play for as the group stages draw to a close."

Michael Owen - Where did it all go wrong?

Until five years ago, he went up and down those same steps wearing the red of Liverpool, the darling of Anfield, a man with the world at his feet. But on Sunday, Owen returns wearing the black-and-white stripes of Newcastle, the Kop will afford him the same indifference his return has generated in recent seasons an! d, whether he likes it not, he will go there with his career in ruins.
